Online Poker became popular after Chris Moneymaker won the WSOP Main Event in 2003. The origins of poker itself go back to the early riverboat days on the Mississippi River.

The Poker Boom and the Web
Poker has been getting popular since the 1980s, but the 21st century where was where it really got interesting. With the introduction of the internet, any player aged over 18 could get involved on a daily basis. They could enter a tournament in one of the many poker rooms for as little as $0.01 and that meant that everyone could have a taste of what poker is really about. Although history shows us that card games and cigars is where poker started, most people know it as an online gambling game. Benny Binion was a player that changed the face of poker, launching a tournament that gave $30,000 to the winner, something we now know as the World Series of Poker.
In fact, poker got even more coverage, when it was televised in 2004. The World Series of Poker was really on the map and this boosted the entries from 800 plus, to well over 2,500. The poker boom is now officially here and it shows no sign of stopping in the near future.
The media's love for poker
Lots of the popularity related to poker has been thanks to various media coverage. It seems nowadays that poker is featured in many magazines, newspapers, not to mention specific media pieces that are designed for poker enthusiasts. Nowadays, we take poker coverage on TV for granted, but it is certainly here to stay.
In fact, poker is also the hot topic in many of the big films. Talking of films, the most recent one of them being Runner Runner, a poker film starring Ben Affleck and Justin Timberlake. Ben Affleck is actually playing off-screen as well. Already back in 2004 he won the California State Poker Championship, giving poker a huge boost of coverage. Thanks to the positive media coverage, most people now like the game more than actually winning cash at the end of it.
Many have suggested that the poker boom is over, but many are likely to disagree. That being said, the WSOP is no longer growing in size and many poker TV program ratings are down. Maybe poker has hit its peak and stability is all that is really needed.
