Over the years certain cards in the hand or pocket have been given a name and these names form some of the jargon or 'lingo' that has developed around Texas holdem. These names are given after an event or because of their rhyming. Some of the more interesting names are listed here.

  • AA - Bullets or pocket rockets
  • AK - Anna Kournikova (looks really good but seldom wins)
  • AT - Bookends (first and last cards of the highest straight)
  • A8 - Deadmans hand (Wild Bill Hickok had aces and tens when he was shot in 1876)
  • A4 - Transvestite (you get the ace first then the 4 which looks like an ace but it's not)
  • KJ - Kojak
  • QQ - San Francisco wedding
  • QT - Robert Varkonyi (his winning hand at WSOP in 2002)
  • Q7 - Computer hand (an old computer once said this the breakeven hand)
  • Q3 - Gay waiter (queen with a trey)
  • Q2 - Daisy (queen of the ducks)
  • JT - Cloutier (has had 3 straight flushes with this beginning hand)
  • 84 - George Orwell
  • 77 - Hockey sticks
  • 76 - Trombones
  • 73 - Joe Hatchem (starting hand when winning WSOP 2005)
  • 72 - WHIP (worst hand in poker)
  • 52 - Bomber (B-52 airplane)
  • 45 - Jesse James (he was shot with a colt .45)
  • 32 - Hooter hand (minimum measurement for their uniform)
