.. the key to success in poker is in your hands.

The origins of poker itself go back to the early riverboat days on the Mississippi River and have evolved in what we know it is today. But along the journey, during the nineteen nineties, came the advent of the internet from which spawned a new way of playing the game and that was online. Yes online poker was about to hit the stage and start people buzzing.

It all began in 1994 when Microgaming produced an online casino and four years later the first online poker room was established. In 1998 Planet Poker opened an online poker room that allowed gamblers to play poker for real money and it was on Jan 1st of this year that the first hand of online poker was dealt. The potential of online rooms soon became apparent and many other rooms soon sprang up. The following year 2000 saw Paradise Poker start up and they soon took the leader ship in this field. In 2004 Sportingbet, a public company, acquired Paradise Poker making them the first poker room to be listed on the stock exchange.

Online Poker Introduction

Online poker is simply poker that is played over the internet. All you have to is find a site with poker rooms, log on and enter one of the rooms on offer. You transfer some money to play with and commence to play against the people already in the room. Cards are dealt by a computer that actually runs the game. If you win, the winnings are transferred to where ever you want them to go.

Online poker differs from casino type poker in a couple of ways.

  • Online poker doesn’t allow you to see the other players reactions and emotions; you can only read players through their betting strategy.
  • The rate of play is slower in casino rooms because shuffling etc is done manually and hence slower than a computer.
  • Online poker is played from the comforts of home whereas to play in a casino you have to drive there, park and then deal with the hundreds of people there.
  • Limits in online poker can be as low as 1 or 2 cents whilst minimums at a casino are usually $1 or $2.

Poker has developed from the early days of frontier America when the early adventurers had a lot of time on their hands and it was a good way to pass the time. And as with the progress of people who now don’t have time on their hands, the speed of the modern poker game has sped up to match today’s rat race; but really online poker is just another way of having a game of cards. The only real difference is that disputes over online poker games today are settled by a judge or magistrate rather than by a six gun.
